Learn About Teeth Whitening Products Before Buying Them

Teeth Whitening
Here is an interesting fact about teeth whitening. Did you know that out of the millions of Americans who use an over the counter teeth whitening solution this year, one in every twenty-five (1/25) will have to be seen by a dentist for a level of pain or discomfort? This pain varies from the mild and bearable to the “I’m in so much pain, a root canal sounds good”. It is important to note that this isn't because teeth whitening is bad, in fact, when we perform the procedure it is pain-free. The discomfort is typically caused by ill-fitting trays or overuse.

Solutions for teeth whitening have been around forever. The earliest tooth brushing was invented to try and keep teeth white and healthy while ancient cultures are known to have rubbed charcoal on their teeth to make them whiter. Needless to say men, and women, have been obsessed with having white teeth for a very long time. Enter the modern world where consumerism drives everything, and there are now a million solutions available easily, and over the counter, at your local pharmaceutical store. While convenience is wonderful, it also carries its own set of risks as many people whiten without the help of a professional.

The massive influx of products has created the only known problem with teeth whitening. Overuse is a common and sometimes painful problem for people who whiten their teeth. But why do people overuse the products? We believe that the answer is simple and starts with the quest for the perfect white teeth and brilliant smile. Over-the-counter products do a great job of getting the smile back the first time. However, what most will not tell you is that after a while, a smile starts to fade, and the brilliance of the teeth’s whiteness starts to diminish. Naturally the teeth will once again start to stain and return to a less than optimal color that is more natural. This is upsetting to some people, and the tendency is to then use the product again, and again, and keep using it every time the smile fades even slightly.

As dentists, we recommend not using a whitening product more than once every 4 to 6 months. This avoids overuse and protects your gums from getting irritated from over exposure to the bleach and other chemicals that are found in the whitening agents. Teeth whitening is designed to help whiten your teeth, but not on a monthly basis. Frequent users, sometimes whitening their teeth more than once a month, are at greater risk for irritation or applying the product to a cavity or infected gum. Any of these scenarios can lead to discomfort.

Our advice is simple. Don’t overuse over the counter teeth whitening products. If you want your teeth to get whiter, have the procedure done at our office instead.  Our solutions are more effective than anything you can buy at the store and we will ensure your comfort during the process.

Learn About the Connection Between Periodontics and Cardiology

Periodontics
Periodontics and cardiology may have a lot in common.  Soon, a periodontist may be working in closer proximity to cardiologists than one might have thought. As more information is emerging about the connection between gum diseases and some heart conditions, there is a possibility that the two fields will be conducting extensive research to find out exactly what these two sets of conditions have in common, and more importantly if one can be used to diagnose and prevent the other. Naturally if there is a way for periodontists to find people that are at a higher risk for heart diseases, based on the condition of their gums it would be an exciting step forward that may give cardiologists an additional early warning mechanism that will ultimately save lives.

Periodontists, in conjunction with cardiologists, have examined a large number of scientific and private studies compiled into a large database, several similarities and conjoining factors have emerged that suggest that gum diseases may be linked to heart conditions, and vice versa. What is important to note is that these studies, and this compilation of data is extremely rudimentary at this stage, which means no important conclusions can be drawn until much more in depth analysis is completed. From an anecdotal evidence point of view, however, it is clear that the two have numerous factors in common which leads one to believe that there is room for more research to gain a more clear understanding of how one condition may be a precursor to or an indicator of the other.

While there is much research to be done, the studies, that have been concluded, have found two very interesting corresponding factors, which warrant further study. The first of these is the elevated levels of CRP, or the C-reactive protein which is found in both heart patients and in patients that have gum diseases. The second is the identical nature of the bacteria found in the atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries of heart patients and the bacteria that affects patients with gum disease.

The C-reactive protein is an important diagnostic and monitoring tool for both cardiologists and periodontists. CRP, or C-reactive protein, reaches elevated levels if the body has some level of inflammation. For a heart patient, this occurs because the build of plaque in the arteries is an inflammatory process which makes it a key tool for diagnosing at risk patients at the cardiologist's office. In periodontics, the gum disease also causes inflammation, which means they too measure the CRP as part of the diagnostic and monitoring process.

The second, and potentially more important, connection between gum diseases and heart conditions come from the identical nature of the bacteria found in atherosclerotic plaque and the bacteria in the gums. Theoretically this could be caused by people with gum diseases brushing their teeth and releasing the bacteria into the blood stream where it makes its way into the arteries. Once in the arteries the bacteria release a protein typically found in the arterial walls, leading the body to activate its defense mechanisms. The result of this would be easier clotting of blood in the affected areas, which could be damaging to the arteries and increases the risk of heart disease. Perhaps periodontics can be an early indication of heart disease to come.

Facts You Should Know About Orthodontics From a Braces Dentist

Braces Dentist
As a braces dentist, we know that orthodontics has become an essential part of modern day dentistry. As more people become aware of the importance of having straight teeth and a properly aligned jaw, the need for orthodontists has skyrocketed. Once thought of as a cosmetic fix, today people understand the significance of having straight teeth, how the jaw influences language skills, and even the importance of a great winning smile. Dentists too have started to work much more closely with orthodontists, to give them a whole new array of tools to improve a patient’s dental health. There is, however, a healthy dose of myths that surround the science of orthodontics.

Straightening teeth and the use of braces are not just for children. Much to the contrary, adults make up more than twenty percent of the patients an orthodontist sees.  We treat adults who want to get their jaw properly aligned, or their teeth straightened. Popular culture has built up the myth that braces are for children and that adults are stuck with the teeth they grew up with. Luckily, as more adults become educated, they are seeking the treatment they can get for their crooked teeth and we can help.

Another popular myth is that braces tend to hurt. This myth does have some foundation in reality. For many years, getting braces was a tedious and often painful process. Fortunately, modern medicine has had an impact on orthodontics as well. Today braces are no longer as uncomfortable, with most people getting used to them very quickly. Braces today are far more manageable, and most patients report minimal, if any, discomfort. As a braces dentist, we work with our patients to ensure that they stay comfortable throughout their treatment.
Many adults are still worried that wearing braces could be embarrassing, especially in a professional environment.

Clear braces, made from natural-colored ceramics have become increasingly more popular as people seeking to straighten their teeth do not want the embarrassment of metal braces. Additional advances allow for some braces to be installed behind the teeth, which places them completely out of sight. These changes have made it so that adults can wear their braces all the time without having to worry about the unsightly metal protruding from their teeth. Additionally, we can use clear aligners to straighten teeth without the use of brackets or wires at all.
Another common idea is that braces take a long time to get a person’s teeth properly aligned. Many patients think that it will take years of wearing braces, with constant adjustments and frequent trips to the orthodontist’s office to get them tightened or adjusted.

While it is true that braces do take time, there really is no set time frame. Each patient is different and so it could take a few months, or a few years to get the teeth straight. Adjustments and tightening are part of the process, which is designed to gradually move your teeth from the natural position they grew into to the place where they were supposed to go. We can let you know what the time frame would look like for your case during a consultation.

Interesting Facts About Straightening Your Teeth From a Braces Dentist

Orthodontics
As a braces dentist, we can straighten your teeth and improve your smile. This is important for your overall health and your appearance.  Crooked teeth do more than make your smile funny.  They are places for food and bacteria to become trapped and increase your risk of getting a cavity.  When your bite is misaligned, it can also create jaw pain and headaches – not a good combination.

Fortunately, there are several ways to improve your smile, and we are experts at finding the right one for our patients.  If you think about a mouth full of metal when you hear the word “braces” – think again.  Orthodontics has come a long way since the 1980’s, and people are straightening their teeth more than ever before because it is so much easier.

Here are some facts you may not know.
  • Braces have gone clear.  As a braces dentist, we can discuss clear braces with you.  This is one way to straighten your teeth without the appearance of metal.  This option works well for some people but is not for everyone so we can let you know if it is the best route for you during a consultation.
  • Look behind the teeth.  Some people are wearing braces behind their teeth now.  This is a new type of procedure where brackets and wires are secured to the back of the teeth so that no one can tell teeth are being straightened.
  • You can have fun with it.  A lot of kids love wearing braces because they make it fun.  At each appointment, the rubber bands are changed, and patients can pick out their colors and create patterns so that their braces become an expression of their taste and style.  You can even color coordinate for your favorite holidays.
  • They shrunk!  As a braces dentist, we like to show our patients how much smaller the brackets and wires are now.  If you have worn braces in the past, or considered it, you will be pleasantly surprised by how much smaller everything is now.  They are just as effective, but now more of your natural teeth will show through.
  • Aligners are popular.  A lot of people are choosing to straighten their teeth with clear aligners.  They look like a retainer that surrounds your teeth, and you can take it out when you eat.  This makes aligners a convenient option for people that don’t want to look like they are wearing braces.
  • They’re cooler now.  Sure, kids used to make fun of braces, but that day has passed.  Now it is extremely common for people to wear braces and a lot of kids actually look forward to it. Wearing braces has become a rite of passage, and the results afterwards are nothing short of amazing.
If you are considering straightening your teeth, schedule an appointment to speak with a braces dentist.  We can discuss the various treatment options and come up with a plan that will work for you and your lifestyle.  Call today to learn more.

Learn How to Take Care of Your Dental Veneers and Make Them Last for Years

Dental Veneers
If you have dental veneers, it is important to take care of them so that they can stay in good condition.  They are supposed to last for five to ten years. Whether or not they do, depends on whether or not they were installed correctly in the first place and how well you take care of them on a regular basis.

There are some simple steps you can take in order to keep your veneers in good condition.  This starts by making sure that you are practicing good oral hygiene.  Make sure to brush your teeth using a soft toothbrush and do so throughout the day.  You also need to floss daily and use an antiseptic mouthwash in order to kill any lingering bacteria.  Get your teeth cleaned at the dentist office twice a year in order to kill any lingering bacteria and get cavities treated.  This is an important step because veneers are placed onto the surface of your natural teeth so if the tooth becomes infected it will impact your veneers.

You should also watch what you put into your mouth.  Don’t bite your nails, chew on pencils, chew ice or hard candy since these can cause your veneers to either fall off or chip.  You can eat all of your favorite foods but avoid things that are known to be too hard for your teeth.  Use caution when deciding what you want to eat so that you don’t bite down on anything that could harm your dental veneers

When visiting our dental office ask us to look to see if there are any signs of you grinding your teeth.  If there are, then you need to wear a night guard when you sleep.  This will prevent your upper and lower teeth from touching which will stop the grinding and any clenching that you may be doing.  This is important because grinding can cause your dental veneers to become chipped or even fall off.  It can also give you a headache as well, so a mouth guard can help you to feel better in general.

It is very easy to care for your veneers.  Just practice good oral hygiene and treat them like you would the rest of your teeth.  This will keep them in good condition.  As an added benefit, you don’t have to worry as much about your teeth becoming stained.  Veneers are stain resistant so if you are used to your teeth becoming yellow fairly easily; this will help.  They key to remember is that you need to whiten the rest of your teeth before your veneers are placed.  Since they don’t stain easily, they also don’t whiten like normal teeth.  By whitening the rest of your teeth first, the veneers will be created in the perfect shade of white and your entire smile will look amazing.

Learn About the Stages in Orthodontics You Will Go Through While Your Teeth are Being Straightened

Orthodontics
While performing orthodontics treatments, we can straighten our patient's teeth and turn their smile into something healthy and beautiful.  Before getting started, we will examine your teeth to make sure that they are healthy.  It is important to remove any infection and treat any cavities so that your teeth and gums are in good shape prior to wearing braces.  It is far easier to treat the infection before starting the process than after.

Once your teeth are in good health, we will discuss your options for straightening them and the various things that you don’t like about your smile. By listening to your needs and concerns, we can make recommendations that are tailored to your specific needs and health.  Whether you straighten your teeth with braces, aligners or cosmetic dentistry, we can help you to improve your appearance and oral health at the same time.

When using orthodontics to straighten teeth, there are several stages that you must go through before the braces can come off.  The first stage is to make sure that there is enough room for all of your adult teeth.  Many people have a pallet that is simply too small for all of their teeth and some need to be pulled or removed as a result. We offer an alternative solution where a metal expander is placed on the roof of your mouth and secured to your teeth. Every day for several weeks, you turn the device, and it slowly expands and pushes your teeth outwards.  As a result, more room is made for your teeth. Many children will wear an expander prior to getting braces as it can solve their overcrowding issues.

Once there is room for your teeth, they can be moved into place using metal braces or clear aligners.  If metal braces are used, a bracket will be placed on each of your teeth, and a wire threaded between them.  The wires are held in place using rubber bands and over the course of the treatment; the wires will be adjusted in order to move teeth into position.  Typically, teeth are targeted so that they are not all moving at the same time.  This makes the process more comfortable, and a similar technique is used with aligners except that the aligners can be switched out at home.

As your teeth are moving into place, your bite will also be adjusted.  It is important to have a bite that is perfectly aligned so that the upper teeth can fit securely over the lower teeth.  When we adjust your bite, we will make sure that your teeth are fitting front to back, side to side, and top to bottom.  By aligning your bite, your jaw won’t hurt as much; headaches can be reduced, and it becomes easier to eat.  This can be done by using rubber bands, headgear, and other orthodontics treatments.

Orthodontics Solutions Involve More than Just Wearing Braces

Orthodontics
Braces are the most commonly known procedure in orthodontics. They are extremely effective at moving teeth into position, correcting a misaligned bite, and creating a straight and beautiful smile.  Braces can be worn by both adults and children, making them ideal for people in all stages of life.  There are, however, times where alternative treatments are needed.

Many children have difficulty with overcrowding.  This occurs when baby teeth fall out too early and, as a result, the remaining teeth shift or move out of place.  When the adult teeth try to come in, the space that should have been reserved for them has been lost.  In this situation, braces are not an appropriate solution because the child is getting their adult teeth in, but they haven’t all come in yet.  We can help by making more room in their mouth so that the adult teeth have a place to go.

Orthodontics involves moving your teeth, jaw, and pallet.  In this scenario, we may want to use a combination of spacers and an expander to move the existing teeth and to expand the pallet so that the adult teeth can come in properly.  Wearing an expander is a common solution because it is a metal device that is placed onto the roof of the mouth and by turning a key, will slowly start to stretch and expand the roof of the mouth.  This is done over several weeks until the pallet has been expanded enough to make room for incoming teeth.  It remains in place for some time in order for the mouth to conform to its new position.  When the adult teeth come in, they will have a spot to grow into that is in line with the other teeth instead of behind them. By performing this procedure early, many children don’t need to wear braces at all.

Children and adults that do get braces may also need additional procedures to move their teeth and jaw into the right position.  Remember that braces can make teeth straight but on their own cannot expand the pallet or align a jaw.  In the case of an overbite, for example, headgear is often worn at night in order to move the top and lower teeth into alignment.  Simultaneously, rubber bands are often used to align the bite.  In this case, the orthodontist tells a patient which upper tooth to start the rubber band on and which lower tooth it should be ended on.  By wearing the bands, the jaw is held in a certain position and slowly moved into place.  Both of these additional steps are typically only needed for a portion of the treatment time.

There is much more involved with orthodontics and multiple ways to straighten teeth.  There is no one size fits all solution so in order to find out what will work best for you, schedule an examination so that we can make a recommendation and discuss various treatment options.

Dental Veneers Can Restore Teeth That Are Damaged While Playing Fall Sports

Dental Veneers
Fall is here and with it comes sports and oral injuries, many of which can be corrected with dental veneers.  It is so common for athletes to have their teeth knocked out or broken that the American Dental Association has advocated athletes wearing mouth guards in order to prevent these injuries.  In fact, over 200,000 high school and college football injuries are prevented every year due to mouth guards.  This gives a glimpse into how many athletes end up in the dentist chair with a cracked tooth.

Fortunately, we can repair our patient’s teeth to their full functionality using a variety of cosmetic dentistry techniques.  This is important because in the past when someone injured a tooth there was a high likelihood that the tooth would need to be pulled or that it would become infected.  Now, this is very rarely necessary thanks to modern dental techniques.

One of the most common ways for restoring a damaged tooth is to use dental veneers.  A veneer is a thin shell that is placed on top of the existing tooth and can be used to fix one that has been cracked or chipped.  As an athlete, it doesn’t take much to chip a tooth. A recreational softball game is a lot of fun in the spring and summer, but it easy to get distracted and have a flying ball accidentally collide with your face.  These are the types of accidents that are extremely common, no matter how careful you are.  If this happens to you, call us right away to schedule an appointment so that your life isn’t interrupted due to a damaged tooth.

How the process works.
After an injury, we will examine your teeth and let you know what steps we recommend for repairing it. If dental veneers are the best option, we will take a mold of your mouth so that a permanent veneer can be created in a lab.  The veneer will match the size, shape, and color of your other teeth so that it blends in perfectly.  In the meantime, we will prepare the tooth by removing a portion of the enamel from the surface.  This is done so that when the veneer is placed, it will lay flat with the gums and not stick out in any way.  It can take a few weeks for the dental lab to create your veneer so during this time frame a temporary one will be worn.  The temporary is attached using glue that is meant to come off, so you have to be careful with what you eat, how hard you brush your teeth and your activity level.  As an athlete, you may need to take it easy for a couple of weeks but we can advise you further after discussing what sports you are involved in.

Once the permanent veneer is ready, you will come back to our office so that we can remove the temporary at bond the permanent one to your existing tooth.  The result is a beautiful looking, natural tooth that is also durable.  This allows you to get back to the game without worrying about your teeth.

A Cosmetic Dentist Explains the Difference Between Crowns and Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers
If your tooth needs to be restored, dental veneers are a common option for doing so.  There are multiple ways to restore a tooth, with dental crowns and veneers being extremely popular.  Both options can be used restoratively and to improve the appearance of a tooth by covering dark stains, holes, chips, and cracks.  There are many similarities in the process but also several key differences.

Here is what you need to know.

Primary Uses.  Dental crowns are typically used when a large portion of the tooth has been removed, or the tooth has become cracked to the point that it is no longer stable.  Veneers, on the other hand, are frequently used to cover dark stains, make teeth even in length, close gaps, and correct a tooth that has been chipped.

Appearance.  Crowns are made from one of three main types of materials: all-metal, porcelain-on-metal, and all-porcelain.  Metal crowns are the most stable while the all-porcelain crowns look the most natural and are better for front teeth.  Dental veneers are made either all-porcelain or all-ceramic so that they look completely natural.  A cosmetic dentist can make recommendations for how to have the most natural and beautiful looking teeth.

Structure.   Dental crowns fit completely around the tooth like a cap.  This is why they can provide additional strength.  Veneers are a thin shell that fits on the front of the tooth, so they are better for cosmetic purposes, but don’t protect like a crown does.

Preparing the tooth.   In both scenarios, the tooth needs to be prepared which involves removing a portion of it in order to make room for the crown or veneer.  With dental crowns, more of the tooth has to be removed since the crown surrounds it on all sides.  A veneer requires only a minimal amount of enamel to be removed.

Temporaries.  Patients need to wear a temporary crown or veneer in between the time that the tooth is prepared, and the permanent one is ready.  This is used to protect the tooth and help it to hold its shape.

Permanent ones are created in a lab.  The dental lab will use a mold or impression of your teeth to create a crown or veneer that is perfectly sized and shaped.  With a crown, this will be created in the material that you have selected ahead of time.  The color will also be matched to your surrounding teeth.

Bonding.  In both cases, the new device will be bonded with the tooth using glue and a light beam.  This will secure the crown or veneer in place so that a person can eat and speak without fear of it becoming loose.

Maintenance.  Once the tooth has healed, it can be maintained just like natural teeth.  Brushing and flossing are necessary along with teeth cleanings twice a year.  This will keep your teeth in good condition.
If you are looking for a solution for restoring a tooth or improving the appearance of your smile, a cosmetic dentist can help.

Orthodontics Are for Adults, Too!

Orthodontics
Orthodontics Are for Adults, Too!
As an adult, orthodontics can help you to look and feel better.  Many people assume that braces are only for kids and once you reach adulthood they are no longer necessary.  The truth is that braces can be helpful at any age.

When teeth are crooked, they can create a variety of health issues that extend far beyond physical appearance.  For example, a misaligned bite occurs when the upper and lower teeth do not fit together like they are supposed to. This can create jaw pain, promote teeth grinding, make it difficult to eat and negatively impact speech patterns.  Oftentimes, people with TMJ suffer symptoms due to a misaligned bite that, once corrected by braces, goes away.

Additionally, crooked teeth are more susceptible to becoming infected due to how easy it is for food and bacteria to become trapped in between them. Severely crooked teeth are very difficult to clean which can lead to cavities.  By simply straightening them with orthodontics, teeth can become healthier.

The Importance of a Beautiful Smile

Straightening teeth is an important step in creating a beautiful smile.  Recently, studies have shown how important a beautiful smile is.  Match.com polled 5,000 men and women and found that a smile is the number one thing that makes a person attractive.  Oral-B did more in-depth research and found that when someone had a beautiful smile they were thought to be 20 percent more attractive than those without.  The reason these studies matter is that the University of California conducted research into how being considered attractive can impact a person’s life.  The results were very enlightening.  People that were “attractive” made 12 percent more money than their peers.  They were also viewed as being a better team player and more helpful overall.  To put it all together – people with beautiful smiles are more attractive and attractive people are more successful.  This may sound like a reach, but the data is clear.

As an adult, you may not be concerned with your outward appearance but apparently the rest of society is, and there are clear benefits for taking care of yourself.  If this doesn't feel particularly relevant, there are health benefits associated with orthodontics that can make wearing braces worth it.

Fortunately, there are multiple ways to straighten teeth, now.  Traditional metal braces are still the most effective for aligning a jaw and closing an open bite.  Rubber bands are typically required to help teeth move into place, and the braces provide the anchor those bands need.  Those that don’t want to wear metal braces can try Invisalign®.  This is a clear way to straighten teeth that is perfect for people that have busy schedules or don’t want people to notice that they are having their teeth straightened. If teeth are not responding to traditional orthodontics, oral surgery is also an option for correcting a tooth or two. To learn which option is best for you, schedule a consultation.

Orthodontics Do More Than Straighten Teeth

Orthodontics
Many patients think the only reason to visit an orthodontist is to get braces. This is the most popular aspect of orthodontics because it straightens people’s teeth and creates beautiful smiles.  However the reality is that it is used to accomplish far more than beautiful straight teeth.  Those who are suffering from a variety of oral health issues can benefit from working with an experienced orthodontist.

It is fairly common for people to have challenges with their bite.  A misaligned bite is when the upper and lower teeth do not fit together properly.  This can lead to pain in the jaw and teeth and can make it difficult to eat properly.  An orthodontist has a variety of procedures that they can use to correct this problem and prevent bite issues.

Another reason patients may need orthodontics is when their teeth come in improperly.  For example, when baby teeth fall out too soon the rest of the teeth can move out of place, and adult teeth can come in behind where they should, which is commonly referred to as overcrowding. Sometimes a spacer is the best way to treat this problem rather than traditional braces.

As an expert in all forms of orthodontics, Vista Dental Care and Specialty Center can make recommendations about which procedure will help to correct your bite or your smile.  We offer traditional metal braces that can be used to straighten your teeth and adjust your bite at the same time.  This is a benefit to many patients as it involves one form of treatment for correcting multiple issues.  We also offer a variety of removable appliances that can be used to correct dental issues.

Braces have improved significantly and if you decide to wear them it is important to know that they are more comfortable than they used to be.  A customized treatment plan will be created based on your needs and lifestyle so that they are as effective as possible. Invisalign may be the best option for adult patients who want to straighten their teeth without wearing metal braces. Invisalign is an excellent option for those who want to straighten their teeth without anyone noticing they are having a dental procedure performed.  With Invisalign a patient wears clear aligners that look like a clear retainer.  They fit completely around a person’s teeth and move them slowly into place without the need for constant adjustments.  This is one of the many ways that orthodontics has improved and provides people with more options than ever.

Wearing braces or Invisalign may be unnecessary if you only have one or two teeth that need to be corrected.   Cosmetic dentistry may be the best solution if this is the case.  Dental veneers and dental implants can both be used to straighten teeth and improve their appearance without the need for ongoing treatment.  Vista Dental Care and Specialty Center offers both orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry and can customize treatment plans based on the individual patient’s needs.

The Many Benefits of Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers
Those who are looking to improve their teeth should try dental veneers.  This is an excellent option that makes transforming your smile while keeping your natural teeth possible.  As a cosmetic dentist, Vista Dental Care and Specialty Center provides a variety of options for restoring teeth and improving a person’s smile – dental veneers are one of them.

If your tooth has been damaged in an accident it can be saved with help from a cosmetic dentist.  Previously, damaged teeth may have been pulled but now they are saved whenever possible.  This is a better and healthier solution that a cosmetic dentist can offer to patients.  Millions of people damage teeth in car wrecks, an accident at work or at home, a slip and fall accident, and more every year.  If you have a damaged tooth, visit a dentist right away to see how they can save your tooth.

When a cosmetic dentist uses dental veneers to save a damaged tooth they place the veneer on top of the existing tooth, so the root structure still needs to be intact.  The process is fairly straightforward.  A veneer is a thin shell that goes on top of a prepared (filed down) tooth in order to prefect its’ appearance and provide the stability the tooth needs in order to fully be prepared.

Dental veneers can also be used for cosmetic purposes.  A dentist can use them to close gaps in between teeth, make teeth even in length, cover dark stains, and even straighten teeth.  This is an excellent option for those that don’t like their smile but want to keep their natural teeth in place. Veneers provide a dentist with the ability to improve a person’s smile without the need for oral surgery.

To determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure, schedule an appointment with Vista Dental Care and Specialty Center. Our dentist will examine your teeth and gums, discuss the goals that you have for your smile, and determine if veneers are the best way to achieve them.  If it is decided that you could benefit from a dental veneer, a mold will be taken of your teeth so that the dental lab can create your veneers.  They will be matched in size, shape, and color to your existing teeth.  This way they will look completely natural once placed
.
The teeth must be prepared before a dental veneer can be put in place.  This typically involves the dentist filing down the existing teeth and placing grooves on top of them.  Filing down the tooth is an essential step for ensuring that the veneer lays flat so that it fits perfectly with the gums.  The grooves serve to hold the cement glue in place so that the tooth and veneer can bond together.

The entire procedure can be completed in two or three visits over the course of a month or two. It is reasonably fast for the dramatic results that dental veneers produce.  Once the veneers are secure and fully healed a person can eat all of their favorite foods and speak normally.  To learn more about our dental veneer services, call and schedule an appointment today.

How to Tell if Dental Veneers are Right for You

Dental Veneers
Many people benefit from dental veneers and how they can improve a smile.  Veneers are a natural looking solution for turning dated, worn, or damaged teeth into something strong and beautiful.  They are created in a lab using a mold of your mouth so that they will always be the perfect fit and look great.
There are several types of cosmetic dentistry procedures so before you decide which one is right for you it is important to consider what your overall goals are.  Here is information you can consider prior to speaking with your dentist.

Do you want a whiter smile?
If your biggest complaint is that your teeth look yellow, you should start by having your teeth professionally whitened.  This is an easy way to brighten your smile and your appearance.  Professional teeth whitening solutions are much stronger than what you can purchase in the store so the results are significant and can whiten teeth by up to eight shades.  Once you are done with your procedure you will be able to tell if there are lingering stains that won’t come off.  When this is the case, dental veneers may be a good option.  They can be placed on top of stained teeth and made to match the white shade of the surrounding ones.

Is your tooth damaged?
If your tooth has become cracked, chipped, or damaged in some way, it is important to fix it for your appearance and for your health.  The type of damage will determine what type of procedure you will need.  Most basic issues like cracks and chips can be corrected with dental veneers.  Since veneers are placed on the front of your tooth they will provide a natural looking appearance without the damage being visible.  If the damage comes from a severe tooth infection that needs a filling or root canal, a dental crown may be a more viable option since it surrounds the tooth entirely and can provide additional strength and durability.

Have you lost a tooth?
If your tooth has fallen out, or is about to, dental veneers won’t be able to help.  Veneers require an existing tooth in order to be placed.  They cannot sustain on their own.  People that have lost a tooth can still have it replaced but a dental implant or bridge is a better solution.  Both will stay in place and give a patient the functionality that they are looking for.  Partial and full dentures can also be worn when there is tooth loss.

Do you want to close a gap?
Small gaps in between your teeth can be corrected with dental veneers.  This is an excellent way to improve your smile and your appearance without waiting for braces to work and then be removed.  Instead of taking a couple of years to close a gap, it can be done in a single procedure with stunning results.

Orthodontics Can Help People of All Ages

Orthodontics
Many people think that orthodontics is only for young people.  Older children and teens are the largest group wearing braces but according to the New York Times, in the past two decades the percentage of adults getting braces has jumped by over 58 percent.  This increase means that over 1.1 million adults are having braces installed on an annual basis.  What once was reserved for young people is now perfectly acceptable and common for people of all ages.
The reasons why adults get braces is as unique as the people that get them.  The reality is that the benefits of braces remain, regardless of how old you are.  Here are some of the ways that they can help you:
  • Change your appearance.   Braces can straighten your smile and transform your appearance.  A crooked smile stands out and can make a person look and feel awkward where a beautiful straight smile will enhance your features and improve your appearance.  Orthodontics can accomplish this.
  • Correct a bite.  A misaligned bite can lead to a variety of oral health issues and cause pain.  When the top and bottom teeth don’t fit together correctly it can make eating difficult.  Many patients with misaligned jaws also suffer from TMJ symptoms and jaw pain.  Aligning the bite can resolve many of these issues, making it important for long term oral health.
  • Improve speech.  People that have gaps or spaces in between their teeth may have difficulty speaking clearly or whistle when they do. Fortunately, this can be corrected with braces.
  • Promote oral health.  Teeth that are crooked or oddly placed have a greater chance of getting teeth and bacteria stuck in between them.  By straightening your teeth, it will also reduce the risk of oral health issues and promote general wellbeing.
Modern dental technology has greatly improved, making orthodontics more effective than ever.  Adults that are considering getting braces have multiple ways of doing so.  Traditional metal braces are still extremely effective when a patient has a misaligned jaw that needs to be corrected or needs to have their pallet expanded in order to make room for their teeth straightening.  This is the most intensive form of braces which allows the orthodontist to modify your teeth and bite at the same time.
Adults that need to have more minor adjustments made, for example their teeth need to be straightened but their bite is fine, may prefer to use Invisalign.  This is a completely clear alternative to traditional metal braces.  Custom aligners that look like a clear retainer, are made in the dental lab.  Each aligner takes your teeth one step closer to being completely straight.  Every couple of weeks you simply replace the current aligner with a new one, until the procedure is complete.  Since they are completely clear, most people will be unable to tell that you are wearing them.  An additional benefit is that they come out so you can remove the aligner for a special occasion or eating dinner with friends.

New Trends in Orthodontics

Orthodontics
Vista Dental Care and Specialty Center practices orthodontics in order to give patients the gorgeous straight smile they have always dreamed of.  We offer the latest options and stay up to date on industry trends in order to give our patients choices in how they want to straighten their teeth.  While the goal is always the same, by giving patients control they can select the option that works within their schedule and fits their lifestyle.
Here are some of the options we provide patients with.
Six Month Smiles©
This innovative procedure is revolutionary for orthodontics.  It is ideal for patients, especially adults that do not want to wear traditional braces and are looking for a quick way to straighten their teeth.  With Six Month Smiles, patients wear clear braces that are less noticeable and therefore more comfortable for many of our patients.  The procedure is geared towards adults so call our office to see if it is right for you.
Traditional Braces
There are times where traditional braces are still the best option for correcting a smile.  Traditional metal braces can correct common problems such as:
·         Severe overbites.  This is unattractive and can cause problems with speech and even eating.  Metal braces can be used to correct your overbite and give you a beautiful smile.
·         Problems with your jaw.   When your jaw is misaligned or out of place, it can cause headaches and pain.  Braces can align your jaw and prevent you from experiencing those symptoms.
·         Crossbite.  When your upper teeth bite inside of the lower teeth, it is a crossbite.  This is uncomfortable and interferes with normal eating patterns.
·         Overcrowding.  Sometimes people need to have their pallet expanded to make room for all of their teeth.  Overcrowding is a common issue that can be corrected with traditional braces.
Technology continues to improve, making it easier to wear braces and making them more effective.  Traditional metal braces can solve the largest amount of problems and go far beyond the cosmetic side of straightening teeth.  This traditional orthodontics procedure is ideal for patients that need to address issues with their bite while straightening teeth.
Invisalign
Patients that want to close gaps in their teeth and fix more minor cosmetic issues should consider Invisalign.  This is an ideal option for busy professionals and people that may have had braces as a child and need to have some minor issues corrected again.  The process is fairly simple and requires fewer trips to the orthodontist.  A mold is taken of your mouth, and custom aligners are created in order to straighten your teeth in a gradual fashion.  The aligners look like a full, clear retainer, and you simply switch them out every couple of weeks.  As you place a new one in your mouth, your teeth will become that much straighter.

We offer the latest in orthodontics in order to provide our patients with options, flexibility, and control over how they want to fix their teeth.  As an expert cosmetic dentist, we can also correct other problems like cracked or chipped teeth.  Call us today to schedule your consultation and to learn how we can transform your smile.

Dental Veneers Can Correct a Chipped or Uneven Tooth

Dental Veneers
As a cosmetic dentist, we use dental veneers to solve a variety of dental problems.  Patients can use them to correct a chipped or uneven tooth and even to close gaps in between teeth.  They are natural looking and extremely versatile, making them an ideal option for patients of all ages.
Fixing your teeth after an accident.
If you have been in a car accident or had a sports injury, your tooth may have become cracked or chipped.  This is fairly common, and millions of people are in accidents every year.  In order to protect your teeth, you should have regular teeth cleanings, brush and floss daily, and use a fluoride toothpaste.  This will strengthen your teeth so that they are less likely to undergo a major injury during an accident.  The goal is to keep your teeth as strong and as healthy as possible so that when an accident does happen, the resulting injury is minor enough to allow you to keep your tooth.
When you schedule an appointment with our family dentist office we will examine your damaged tooth, the gums that surround it and the teeth nearby.  When your tooth becomes damaged the area around, it may also become impacted. It is important to identify all of the damage that has occurred before going forward with a plan to correct it.  Many times we will recommend dental veneers to fix the problem.
Veneers can be used for many things including correcting a chipped or cracked tooth.  They can also be used to close gaps in your teeth and make your teeth even.  The process of having veneers placed is easier than you may think.  They are a synthetic front that is placed on top of your existing tooth.  Your natural tooth and root system remains which makes the process faster than having a dental implant installed.
If veneers are the best option for correcting your damaged tooth, we will take a mold of your mouth and have the lab create a veneer that is perfectly matched in both size and shape to your existing tooth. This will ensure that your veneer will look like your natural tooth, and no one will know that it was ever damaged.  You may also want to do the surrounding teeth at the same time in order to cover up stains or correct any cosmetic issues that have been bothering you.

On the day that your dental veneers are placed we will file down your teeth to make sure that sure that the veneer will lay flat and in line with your gums.  This is extremely important and the reason why you should work with an experienced cosmetic dentist.  Grooves will also be placed onto the surface of your tooth to ensure that the cement glue doesn’t slide off.  Your completed veneer will be placed on top and bonded to your existing tooth.  Once secure you will be able to go home and enjoy your beautiful smile.

Dental Veneers for Seniors

Dental Veneers
If you are a senior dental veneers can help you to restore the youthful look of your smile.  It is normal for people to have yellow and dull looking teeth as they age.  Teeth are one of the main signs of age.  You can apply wrinkle cream and even have cosmetic procedures but if your teeth look dull, you will still look older.
We can transform your smile and give you that youthful appearance back.  A bright white smile is often the first thing people will notice when they look at you.  It can be welcoming and inviting.  Unfortunately, many people are embarrassed by their smile and tend to hide it from the world.  If this is you, let us give you a new smile and restore your confidence.
Dental veneers are a fantastic solution for improving your smile because they can fix a variety of problems while using your natural teeth.  Here is how the process works.
·         Consultation with a cosmetic dentist.  In your initial consultation, we will examine your teeth and gums to identify any potential health issues and discuss the goals you have for your smile.  By understanding what you want to accomplish, we can create the right treatment plan.
·         Teeth cleaning.  Before you have veneers placed your teeth should be cleaned and any oral health issues corrected, such as fixing a cavity.
·         Teeth whitening.  The veneers will be made in a lab and matched to your existing teeth.  If veneers are only covering some of your teeth, it is important to have your existing teeth whitened first so that all of your teeth will be bright and beautiful.
·         A mold is taken of your existing teeth.  The mold will be sent to the lab so that they can create your new veneers in the right size and shape.
·         Your teeth are shaved down.  Any tooth that is going to have a veneer placed on it needs to be shaved down so that the veneer will lay flat with your gum line, otherwise your veneer would stick out and look unnatural.
·         Groves are placed on your teeth, and glue is used.  The groves help the glue stay in place.
·         Veneers are installed.  The veneers are placed directly onto the glue which will hold them in place.  Once the veneers are secure you can go home.
Your teeth and gums may be sensitive for a few days so you will need to eat soft foods and may want to avoid drinking anything too hot or too cold.  Once you are completely recovered you will be able to eat all of your favorite foods and drink both cold and hot items.  Dental veneers don’t require any additional maintenance.  All you need to do is brush and floss like normal along with using an antiseptic mouthwash. Visiting the dentist twice a year will also keep your new teeth healthy.

Within two visits, dental veneers can restore your smile and your confidence.  We are experts and will make the process simple and easy.  Schedule your consultation today!

A Cosmetic Dentist Can Restore Your Teeth

Cosmetic Dentist
Losing teeth can be painful, but a cosmetic dentist can help.  In years past when someone lost a tooth their only option was to wear a full or partial set of dentures in order to have some functionality where that tooth once was.  Dentures can be an effective option, but they can also be uncomfortable and pop out of place when eating or talking.  Fortunately, there is a better way.
We can restore the teeth that you have lost.  Losing teeth is nothing to be embarrassed about.  Statistically 70 percent of adults will lose teeth in their lifetime.  For some this may be a single tooth here or there.  For others, it is all of their teeth.  Whatever the case may be you are not alone, and you don’t have to live without your teeth.
As a cosmetic dentist, we offer implant dentistry, bridges, and dentures, all of which can restore what you have lost.  When you lose a tooth, schedule an appointment with Vista Dental Care and Specialty Center so that we can inspect the area and recommend treatment options. Every patient has different health concerns, and there is no one size fits all dental treatment.  Each treatment plan must be made based on the specific patients, their health, and their goals.  For example, you have lingering gum disease having a dental implant installed would not be wise, it would be better to start with dentures or temporary false teeth while any gum disease treatments were completed.  For this reason, it is essential for you to have a consultation, dental examination, and teeth cleaning prior to discussing the best way to improve your teeth.
Our goal is to give you a gorgeous smile, full functionality, and help you to maintain long term oral health.  It is important to address any ongoing health concerns prior to completing a cosmetic dentistry procedure.  Otherwise, your new teeth could also become infected.  Healing first, appearance second.
Once you are cleared as healthy our cosmetic dentist can begin installing the implants.  This is a three part process.  First, a metal piece is implanted underneath your gum line and screwed into your jaw bone.  Eventually, it will fuse to the bone itself and create a durable synthetic root system. A second metal piece is attached to the first at the surface of your gum line.  This is where the new synthetic tooth is attached.

The synthetic tooth, or teeth, are created in a lab and made to match the teeth around it.  If all of your teeth are getting redone, they will all be made bright, white and beautiful.  If, however, you are only replacing one or two teeth you should have a teeth whitening procedure before you start the process.  That way the lab will create teeth to match white ones, instead of yellow or stained teeth.  The implant process can take a few months but once completed is an excellent way to have full functionality, eat all of your favorite foods, and take care of your teeth without any additional steps.  Call the Vista Dental Care and Specialty Center today to get started.
